Biography

Ralph S. Johnson (b. 1900) was born in Atlantic City, New Jersey. He enrolled in the New York State College of Forestry at Syracuse University (later the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry) in 1920 and graduated in 1924. During his time as a student at Syracuse University, Johnson was a member of the Forestry Club and the Kappa Theta fraternity. To fulfill work requirements for his degree in forestry, Johnson worked on a timber cruiser in Nova Scotia, Canada in the summer of 1923, which sparked a deep interest in the forests of Nova Scotia. After his graduation, Johnson worked as a forester for a number of paper companies, ultimately returning to Nova Scotia in 1927 to work for the Bowater Mercey Paper Company, where he would remain until his retirement in 1965. Over the course of his career, Johnson became a prominent figure in the Canadian forestry field. He served for two years as the president of the Nova Scotia Forestry Association, was voted a fellow of the Canadian Institute of Forestry in 1977 and in 1986 received the John C. Currie Award from the Nova Scotia section of the Canadian Institute of Forestry for his work promoting forestry to the public. In the same year, he published the book The Forests of Nova Scotia: A History.

Scope and Content Note

The Ralph S. Johnson Photograph Album contains images with captions from Johnson's time at the 1922 Sophomore Summer Camp in Cranberry Lake, New York for New York State College of Forestry at Syracuse University students. The photographs document daily life and work of students at the camp, as well as locations visited by the students including Mount Marcy, the Fulton Chain of Lakes and Tupper Lake.
