Thomas Hughes Martin (1941-2014) was an associate professor at Syracuse University’s School of Information Studies from 1980 to 2007.
Prior to his time at the University, Martin majored in mathematics at Dartmouth College, earned a law degree from the University of California at Berkeley and obtained a Ph.D. in communication research from Stanford University. He was also a founding faculty member at the University of Southern California’s Annenberg School of Communication.
Martin’s main areas of interest included human-computer interaction, information technology policy and impacts of information systems. During his career, he authored and co-authored numerous papers that dealt in these and other related areas.
Among his numerous accomplishments, Martin was one of the primary designers of the Stanford Physics Information Retrieval System (SPIRES), the system in which Socrates -- a library circulation management tool -- was based. He also served in the Peace Corps in Panama for two years and visited Brazil twice (once in 1994 and once in 1983) as a Fulbright scholar.
Outside of his work at the University and in the field of information studies, Martin was active in the Sierra Club and sang in the Syracuse Chorale. He retired from Syracuse University in 2007 and received emeritus status in 2008.
The Thomas Hughes Martin Papers are divided into two series.
The Course Materials series contains syllabi, exam questions, case studies, slides, transparencies, assignments, guidelines, reserve book lists and more relating to Martin's time as an information studies professor.
The Scholarly Work series contains papers, publications, reports, plans, reviews, proposals and more relating to Martin's research and published works as an information studies professional.
