The S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications is the communications school at Syracuse University. Its roots can be found in the establishment of a journalism department in the School of Business Administration in 1926 and then the School of Journalism in 1934. Its first dean was M. Lyle Spencer. At that time the School resided in Yates Castle until 1953. In 1964, the first building for the Newhouse Communications Complex, Newhouse I, was completed, thanks to a gift from Samuel I. Newhouse. The School of Journalism and the Department of Television and Radio (from the School of Speech and Dramatic Art) were merged into the new S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications in 1971. The School is housed in the three buildings of the Newhouse Communications Complex (Newhouse II opened in 1974 and Newhouse III in 2007) and now offers a wide array of programs including advertising, journalism, photography and public relations.
Newhouse School Records comprise various materials which document the history of the School. The records include subject files, old School of Journalism records, faculty meeting minutes, bulletins, student fact books, photographs, and publications.
