Biography

Photograph of David Norton

David Norton (1923-2017) earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in journalism from Syracuse University in 1954 and 1956 respectively and taught at Syracuse University's School of Journalism (Newhouse School) from 1954 to 1985. Norton was born in Jamestown, New York. Before his career at Syracuse University, Norton worked for various printing shops, including Martin Merz & Son of Jamestown, New York and, while at Syracuse University, he ran two printing presses: Castle Room Press and Spare Moments Press. Castle Room Press was also known as the Frederick W. Goudy Typographic Laboratory at the School of Journalism at Syracuse University and produced small quantities of student works. It was mostly used for advanced graphic arts classes at the University. Spare Moments Press was a private printing shop that Norton owned and ran out of the basement of his house. It was a pre-1900 print shop and Norton collected and used old printing face types and illustrations.
