The National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) was founded in 1974 at Purdue University in order to improve the recruitment and retention of its black engineering students. Since then, there have been more than 500 chapters founded in the United States and abroad, with over 17,000 members. As stated by the NSBE, their mission is to “increase the number of culturally responsible Black Engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally and positively impact the community.”
The Syracuse University collegiate chapter hosts a number of programs, including the Pre-Collegiate Initiation Program, in which members tutor K-12 students in math and science, and door-to-door informational visits through A Walk for Education.
The collection comprises event programs, publications, clippings, and other materials related to the administration of the club for the Syracuse University chapter of the NSBE. There is also a scrapbook with photographs, which was disassembled and placed into folders during processing.
