Finding aid created by: Anna E. Shuff
Date: 2025

Historical Note

Nu Gamma Phi was a physical education honorary fraternity founded at Syracuse University. It was established in 1921 and later disbanded. There is no documentation of the fraternity after 1939.

Scope and Content Note

The Nu Gamma Phi Scrapbooks contain newspaper clippings pertaining to Syracuse University athletics and the physical education honor society Nu Gamma Phi. These clippings come from local and national newspapers, including the New York Times, the New York Herald-Tribune, World Telegram, the Syracuse Post-Standard and the Syracuse Journal-Telegram. The larger of the two scrapbooks contains information about football from Colgate University and Cornell University as well as Syracuse University. The smaller of the two contains information on a wider variety of men's sports, including basketball, soccer, football, track and field, hockey, lacrosse, and wrestling. Also included is a program from the 1926 Block S Dinner, an honorary event for student athletes.
