Phi Beta Kappa is the national honor society for undergraduates in the liberal arts and sciences. Kappa of New York Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa began at Syracuse University on September 11 1895, when the charter was issued to the chapter after faculty from the College of Liberal Arts (College of Arts and Sciences) petitioned to the national board of Phi Beta Kappa. Charter members include Chancellor James R. Day, Professor Wellesley P. Coddington, Professor Edgar A. Emens, Professor Ernest N. Pattee, and Professor Edgar C. Morris. The faculty had sent in applications to Phi Beta Kappa prior to 1895, but those applications were denied. They officially elected officers on February 10, 1896 and five days later, the constitution and bylaws were adapted. Phi Beta Kappa at Syracuse University continues to initiate members and is still active on campus.
The collection spans from 1895 to 2002 and includes materials related to the activities, members and history of Kappa of New York Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa. Included in the collection is a secretary's book, which contains a copy of the constitution and minutes from meetings. Also in the collection are event programs, constitutions and publications from the honorary society. Additionally, the original charter presented to the charter members is in this collection.
