Raymond F. Piper (1888-1962) was a professor of philosophy at Syracuse University. Piper earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Wisconsin in 1912, and his master's degree and Ph.D. from Boston University in 1915 and 1920, respectively. Piper also studied at the Harvard Divinity School, the University of Grenoble, and the Sorbonne. In 1917, he came to Syracuse University as a philosophy professor and remained in that position until his retirement as emeritus professor in 1954. He published several books on philosophy and art. Piper was also a member of Phi Beta Kappa, the American Philosophical Association, the American Society of Aesthetics, and the University Methodist Church.
The Raymond Piper Papers contains materials related to Piper's career as a philosophy professor at Syracuse University as well as his research and writings. Materials related to Piper's work at Syracuse University include lecture notes, and professional and personal correspondence. Other materials include research notes, a collection of art and poetry from various countries, speeches, manuscripts, photographs and negatives taken during Piper's travels, and personal diaries. The collection also includes photographic slides taken by his wife, Lila K. Piper.
