David H. Ryel was an architecture student at Syracuse University in the early 20th century. He earned his certificate in architecture in 1911. According to his family, he worked on his certificate for seven years, taking time away from his studies to earn money to pay for his classes. During these breaks, Ryel would work as a teacher in the Tug Hill Plateau area (located northeast of Syracuse) or even as a cook. Upon graduating, he worked as an architect in Rochester, where he raised his family.
The David H. Ryel Papers consist of architectural drawings and watercolors of buildings and structures created by Ryel that were completed during his time at Syracuse University. The plates are most likely part of an assignment, as well as several of the watercolors, since many of them have a Syracuse University or dated stamp on them. Also in the collection are photographs and a program that relate to Ryel's time at Syracuse University.
All measurements are rounded to the nearest quarter inch.
Unless otherwise noted, all drawings and sketches are signed by David Ryel.
