Bernard L. Sachs was born in Brooklyn, New York on April 16, 1914. In 1937, he attained a certification from The Cooper Union Art School in Manhattan with a focus on painting and design. Over the next few years, he worked as a freelance artist and designer. Sachs continued his education at The New School in New York City, taking a drama workshop.
Postponing his career, Sachs joined the Army Corps of Engineers in 1942, reaching the rank of 1st lieutenant. He traveled all over Europe during and after the war before leaving the army in 1946. He went back to The New School as an instructor and technical director for a year, as well as working at the Rollins Theatre School nearby.
Sachs stayed interested in design but also took a heavy interest in drama and speech, which led to a position at Syracuse University. He worked as an Instructor of Drama as well as the technical director and designer for multiple stage productions during his time at Syracuse University. He started teaching in the fall of 1947 and left in the summer of 1951, working on at least 15 plays. He also earned a Bachelor's in Fine Arts in 1950 while working at the University.
Bernard L. Sachs died June 29, 2000.
The Bernard L. Sachs Papers contain photographs and slides of the production and stage designs he created for 12 plays at Syracuse University, with some notes pertaining to the production, actors and location of the performances. There are also production photos for 3 plays not associated with Syracuse University where he worked as technical director and designer. A review and photos of a versatile dimmer control board by Sachs is also included.
