Donald B. Sanford (1906-1990) was a doctor and graduate of Syracuse University. He received his B.A. from the University in 1930 and graduated from the College of Medicine in 1933. While at Syracuse University, he was a member of Kappa Sigma and the medical school fraternity Sigma Kappa Kappa. He opened a private practice in Syracuse in 1937, before serving with the United States Army 52nd General Hospital in England during World War II. After the war he returned to private practice, and then later worked in the emergency room of Community General Hospital in Syracuse, now Upstate University Hospital at Community General, until his retirement in 1977.
The Donald B. Sanford Films consists of three film reels.
The first and second reels show surgical procedures being performed at the Hospital of the Good Shepherd in the 1940s. The third reel shows a football game between Syracuse University and Colgate University at Archbold Stadium and includes various scenes around campus.
The third reel of this collection contains multiple depictions of the Saltine Warrior, the Syracuse University mascot at the time, who was a racist portrayal of Native Americans that users may find objectionable. The representations contained in this collection were prevalent at the time of their creation although no less harmful and inaccurate than they are today. The collection is preserved and presented for its historic and research value.
