Biography

Sonia "Sunny" Dalrymple Schork (b. 1934) graduated from Syracuse University with her bachelor's degree in English education in 1955, and with her master's degree in education 1956. While at Syracuse University, she was a member of Gamma Phi Beta, sang in the chapel choir and wrote for the Daily Orange. She was also a campus guide and a member of the Goon Squad. After her graduation, Schork went on to work as an English teacher for 35 years in Syracuse, New York, Florida, and Tombstone, Arizona.

Scope and Content Note

The Sonia Dalrymple Schork Scrapbook consists of a disassembled scrapbook of materials relating to Schork's time during and shortly after her student career at Syracuse University from 1951 to 1959. These materials include memorabilia such as a Syracuse University pennant, a freshman beanie, a sorority garter, and buttons from Schork's time in the Goon Squad. Also included in the scrapbook are photographs of sorority and fraternity contests, including the 1952 Winter Carnival ice sculpture competition and the 1952 Colgate Weekend poster competition. Other photographs show Spring Weekend parade floats, sorority traditions, parties, and daily life at Nottingham Cottage, where Schork lived during her freshman year. Additionally, the scrapbook contains printed materials such as dance cards, event programs, and booklets, including a copy of the 1951-52 student handbook, and clippings from the Daily Orange by and about Schork.

This collection contains images that users may find objectionable due to racist imagery. The representations contained in this collection were conventional at the time of their creation, although no less harmful and inaccurate than they are today. The collection is preserved and presented for its historic and research value.
