Paul J. Sedgwick (1896-1973) was a professor of botany at Syracuse University and an influential photographer. Sedgwick received his Bachelor of Science in 1918 and his Ph.D. in 1922 from the University of Chicago. He came to Syracuse University in 1922 and was promoted to full professor in 1938. He retired as professor emeritus in 1962. Sedgwick was an early user of color photography as well as a pioneer in time-lapse photography and assisted in the design of time-lapse cameras. His photographs have been used by Walt Disney and Perkins of Newark.
The Paul J. Sedgwick Papers contain mostly visual materials related to his work in botany and photography including photographs, films, photograph negatives, glass plate negatives, and lantern and stereo slides. A few of the films document Syracuse University, including commencement and faculty events. The collection also includes a selection of Sedgwick's photography and lab equipment. In addition to Sedgwick’s botanical photography, the collection includes correspondence, his journals, course materials, and publications.
