Pamela J. Shoemaker (1950- ) was a faculty member at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications. Born on October 25, 1950, Shoemaker earned her bachelor’s degree in journalism and a master’s degree in communications from Ohio University. She later went on to earn a Ph.D. in mass communications from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. Following her graduation in 1982, Shoemaker became an associate professor in the Department of Journalism at the University of Texas at Austin. She remained there until 1991 when she accepted a position as professor of mass communications and director of the School of Journalism at Ohio State University.
In 1994, Shoemaker was named the John Ben Snow Professor of Newspaper Research at Newhouse and continued to teach at Syracuse University for many years. During her career, Shoemaker coauthored several books and publications including Gatekeeping Theory (2009) and News around the World: Practitioners, Content, and the Public (2006). During her time as a University faculty member, she won many awards including the Paul J. Deutschmann Award for Excellence in Research as well as the Krieghbaum Under-40 Award given by the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC). Shoemaker has also spent her time as an editor of professional journals including Communication Research (Sage).
The Pamela J. Shoemaker Papers contain materials from 1983 until 2009 related to her professional work. This collection is divided into three series: Correspondence, Manuscripts and Publications.
Correspondence contains letters regarding the publication and editing process of her professional writings.
Manuscripts includes drafts of Shoemaker's publications, showing the process of editing and revision. Much of this series includes drafts of Gatekeeping Theory (2009) and News around the World: Practitioners, Content, and the Public (2006).
Publications contains Shoemaker's published articles including "Item Nonresponse: Distinguishing between Don't Know and Refuse."
