Somerset Y was the official name for university and college branches of the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union (WCTU). The Syracuse University Somerset Y was founded in 1898 and dissolved around 1920. Its stated goal was to study the problem of alcohol from a medical and economic viewpoint and came out of a push by the WCTU to make temperance fashionable among young people. Somerset Y at Syracuse University was part of the broader temperance movement of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
The Syracuse University Somerset Y Records comprise notebooks related to the meetings, members, and administration of Somerset Y at Syracuse University from 1913 to 1918. The collection also includes paper enclosures, usually notes and lists, found between the pages of the notebooks.
