W. Clyde Sykes (1887-1969) was an alumnus and trustee of Syracuse University. He was born on October 1, 1887 in Benzinger, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Masten Park High School in Buffalo, New York in 1905. Sykes graduated with a Bachelor of Science from Syracuse University in 1909. He was a lifetime member of the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity. He served as a member of the Board of Trustees of Syracuse University from 1942 to 1969. He ran several family businesses, serving as president of the Emporium Lumber Company and treasurer of the Grasse River Railroad company in the Adirondack town of Conifer, New York. He was also president of the Empire State Forest Products Association. In 1917, his father, William L. Sykes, purchased a private forest preserve in the Adirondack Mountains, which W. Clyde Sykes would inherit and sell to the Boy Scouts in 1951. This property became Massawepie Boy Scout Camps.
Sykes was very active in the Methodist Church, and served as a delegate to the National Conference of Methodist Men. He married Marian Chappell, who also attended Syracuse University.
The W. Clyde Sykes Papers contain class notebooks, correspondence, memorabilia, and reports from his time as a student and member of the Board of Trustees at Syracuse University, as well as materials from his professional life in the railroad and logging industries. The papers also feature publications and educational materials related to Sykes' involvement in the Methodist Church and several group portraits, including a photograph taken at the fiftieth anniversary of the Syracuse University chapter of Phi Kappa Psi fraternity.
