Theta Chi Beta, an honorary religion society, was founded at Syracuse University in 1915 by Dr. Ismar J. Peritz, a professor of religion at the University. It is the oldest scholastic society in North America dedicated to academic excellence in the study of religion. There were two types of membership throughout Theta Chi Beta's history: "actives" and "honoraries." "Actives" were comprised of undergraduate and graduate students that maintained a high grade point average in religion. "Honoraries" were members of the faculty or local clergy whose academic and scholarship were considered high achieving. Theta Chi Beta still exists today as a religion honor society.
The Theta Chi Beta Collection contains materials that span from 1915 to 1990. Included in the collection are photocopies from the original record books of Theta Chi Beta, materials from the 50th and 75th anniversaries and membership records.
