The predecessor of the current College of Visual and Performing Arts, the College of Fine Arts, opened in 1873. It was the first fine arts college of its kind in the United States, and George Fisk Comfort served as its first dean. About 100 years later, in 1972, the College of Visual and Performing Arts was created, combining the School of Art, School of Music, the Department of Speech, and the Department of Drama. The first dean was August L. Freundlich, former dean of the School of Art. Today the College of Visual and Performing Arts encompasses six departments and schools: the School of Art, Department of Communication and Rhetorical Studies, School of Design, Department of Drama, Setnor School of Music, and Department of Transmedia. The Shaffer Art Building houses the School of Art and Department of Transmedia. The School of Art also resides in Smith Hall and Comstock Art Facility. Communication and Rhetorical Studies are located in Sims Hall, and the School of Design classes are held in the Nancy Cantor Warehouse in downtown Syracuse. The Department of Drama uses the Regent Theater Complex. The Setnor School of Music occupies Crouse College.
The Syracuse University College of Visual and Performing Arts Records comprise various materials which document the history of the College. The records include correspondence, slides, office files, annual reports, and centennial materials. Also, the records contain faculty files, travel files, bulletins and other printed materials.
