George W. Weaver was a member of Syracuse University's Class of 1878.
George Weaver was born in Penfield, New York on August 2, 1855 and grew up in Elmira, New York. He attended Syracuse University between 1874 and 1878 and was a member of the Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity. He served as an editor of the Syracusean, Syracuse University's yearbook, in 1878. He married Esther L. Mead of Nassau County, New York in 1880 and had four children.
Weaver was an editor and publisher of Ilion Citizen of New York between 1880 and 1888. On September 20, 1884, he published the first newspaper in the world to be composed entirely by a type setting machine and printed by electric power. Weaver was the founder and editor of the Herkimer Citizen. He served as director of several manufacturing and other companies afterward. Weaver died in September of 1933.
The George W. Weaver Scrapbook starts with the dedication program of the Hall of Languages of 1873. The scrapbook also includes an address about Syracuse University and “Dangers and Duties of Educated Men” by Chancellor Haven. Additionally, there are programs for junior exhibitions, class days, field days, commencements, Thanksgiving receptions, Syracuse University anniversaries, as well as musical programs during Weaver's time at Syracuse University. Also included are local newspaper clippings regarding these and other events and news about Syracuse University during his time as a student. Being a member of Delta Kappa Epsilon, Weaver saved several fraternity programs and invitations to banquets, conventions and reunions. Also within the scrapbook are his sophomore excursion tickets and several materials related to the death of George Hugh Erwin Maclay, a fellow fraternity member. This scrapbook ends with a copy of the first newspaper to be printed by electric power noted in his biography.
