Biographical History

Dr. Benjamin Copeland (1855-1940) was a Methodist minister in Buffalo, New York, the pastor of the Richmond Avenue Methodist Episcopal Church. He was also a poet, writing on inspirational, religious, and patriotic themes.

Scope and Contents of the Collection

The Benjamin Copeland Papers consists of correspondence, memorabilia, printed material, and writings.

Correspondence is entirely with Bishop Adna W. Leonard. Most of the letters are accompanied by a poem.

Memorabilia consists of a scrapbook (disbound); contents include correspondence, printed items, clippings, programs, photographs, etc.

Printed material includes clippings of Copeland's poems as well as short items by others.

Writings contains handwritten and typed drafts of poems.

Scrapbook was disbound at some point and most items removed from pages. Types of material include newspaper clippings, incoming letters, programs, postcards, poems by Copeland (both handwritten and printed), an official US citizen travel document issued by the Department of State in 1892, and more. Notable individuals represented in the letters include Theodore Roosevelt, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Elihu Root, Woodrow Wilson, Lord Robert Cecil, S. Parkes Cadman, Bishop Edwin Hughes, Bishop Adna W. Leonard, Bishop Francis J. McConnell, Syracuse University Chancellor Charles W. Flint, the Christian Advocate, King Edward VII, composer Carl F. Price, and Japanese Ambassador Hiroshi Saito.
