Joseph Golden was born on October 13, 1928 in Winthrop, Massachusetts. He received his bachelor’s degree from Tufts University in 1951, his master’s degree from Indiana University in 1952 and his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois in 1954. Golden taught at Elmira College and Cornell University before coming to Syracuse University in 1963. During his time teaching, Golden focused on classes in acting, playwriting, radio and television as well as theater. He resigned from Syracuse University in 1966.
Golden continued his professional career through cultural centers and organizations. He served as director of the Cultural Resources Council of Syracuse and Onondaga County, Performing Arts Facility Committee, the Civil Center of Onondaga County and the John H. Mulroy Civic Center, where he helped to oversee its construction. His membership in professional organizations included the American Educational Theatre Association, Children’s Theatre Conference and Speech Association of America, among others. Golden left Syracuse in 1990 and accepted a lead position at the Spirit Square Center for the Arts in Charlotte, North Carolina until 1997. Over the span of his career, Golden wrote an extensive amount of dramatic works for the stage, plays for children and television scripts and he won several awards for his work in playwriting. Golden passed away on April 18, 2009 in South Carolina.
The Golden Papers includes many of the written works of Joseph Golden between the years of 1946 and 1979. Included are clippings and programs that Golden saved. Many of the clippings are articles written by Golden or articles about him or his plays. The Golden Papers contain reports and papers relating to drama and theatrical groups that he directed as well as many of his play scripts. Also among his papers are awards and his high school yearbook.
