Views 15 & 16  show the main boiler room and the installation of hot water piping, valves, pumps, and controls. Due to the extremes in temperature, expansion and contraction of piping, and associated operating fatigue of the system, all chilled and hot water piping is welded together by "Steamfitters". The welders are certified and each weld is field checked for soundness under full operating pressures.

Image 16 shows a typical welded connection which has oxidized during installation. This will be cleaned and painted prior to pipe insulation being installed over the assembly. Note the hanger locations for heavy piping must be placed at structural beams and girders, or pre-designed composite slabs reinforced for this sort of attachment. The loads can be substantial in large buildings. A one foot section of pipe might weigh 40 pounds and when filled with water it could weigh over 100 pounds per foot. The concentrated loads imposed by the hanger locations are reviewed by the structural engineer and field checked prior to installation.
