Historical Note

Among the 270 victims of the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland were 35 students returning home from study abroad through Syracuse University. Following the tragedy, members of the University community, including Chancellor Melvin Eggers, were in regular contact with the media, the student body, the public, investigating agencies, victims' families, and the town of Lockerbie. The correspondence contained in this collection represents a sample of the types of communications that occurred between Syracuse University and others impacted by the bombing of Pan Am 103. These materials were deposited with the Archives by the Office of Undergraduate Studies, and the Office of the Chancellor.

Scope and Content Note

Materials in the Pan Am 103 Correspondence Collection represent a portion of communications between selected offices of Syracuse University and various individuals and communities impacted by the bombing of Pan Am 103. The items in this collection have been arranged by subject, and include: correspondence related to the December 21, 1988 basketball came played at the University's Carrier Dome; Chancellor Melvin Eggers' letters to the families of the 35 students killed in the bombing; press releases from various Syracuse University departments pertaining to events related to the legacy of Pan Am 103 on campus; communications with the community of Lockerbie; and various other topics. This collection includes a small number of oversized items.

Access Restrictions

School, college and department records are restricted to the office of origin for 30 years. Requests to use restricted records must be obtained in writing from the office of origin.

Office of the Chancellor records are restricted to the office of origin for 50 years. Requests to use restricted records must be obtained in writing from the office of origin.
