The predecessor of the College of Arts and Sciences was the College of Liberal Arts, the first at Syracuse University. The first building on campus, the Hall of Languages, housed the College of Liberal Arts in 1871. Prior to the Hall of Languages, classes were held in the Myers Block on East Genesee and Montgomery Streets in downtown Syracuse. The first dean of the College of Liberal Arts was Dr. John Raymond French, who was a professor in mathematics. In 1971, the College of Liberal Arts was reorganized into the College of Arts and Sciences. Now the College of Arts and Sciences house sciences and mathematics, humanities, and joint courses with the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs.
