Painters and Poets Together: The Folder Story

Folder, published by poet Daisy Aldan and Richard Miller, and printed by Floriano Vecchi at Tiber Press, provided an outlet for the poets and painters of the New York School. There were four issues, published between 1953 and 1956, and they included a wide variety of artistic expression: musical scores, translations, drama, criticism, and poetry, as well as prints and drawings. Robert Mattison describes Hartigan's contributions in his book entitled Hartigan: A Painter's World:

Hartigan made her first prints for this publication, three silkscreens for the first issue and the covers for issues three and four. Vecchi introduced her to the technique of silkscreen printing which he had learned in Italy. (He later taught Andy Warhol to use this silkscreen technique.) Hartigan's first three prints were an abstract still life and compositions based on River Bathers (1953) and The Persian Jacket, although the mood was entirely different in the prints. The small, brightly colored silkscreens have a lyrical character that distinguishes them from her more monumental and powerfully evocative oil paintings.
