Grace Hartigan's journal (quoted in Grace Hartigan: A Painter's World by Robert Mattison) provided the background for her painting Masquerade:
In the market Thursday I came upon piles of old clothes and costumes and bought some that excite me-a long black hooded cape, a red hunter's coat and beaded twenties dress. Since then I can think of nothing but making a large painting called 'Masquerade' for which I shall use all the Folder people.
