image 19: Smoke Purging System.
This series of images (19-21) show the ducts and associated dampers connected to the smoke purging system of the two atrium spaces. Fire code requires that all atriums be purged of smoke either by natural buoyancy associated with the stack effect, or by mechanical means if the atrium is over a certain height limitation. The system shown here is of the mechanical type.
Image 19 shows a mechanical damper which is initiated, or opened, by a fire in the building, a smoke detector going off, a flow meter detecting water flow in the sprinkler system or a manual override. Blowers in the mechanical penthouse, as well as dampers allowing fresh air to enter the atriums, are coordinated to work in concert when a fire emergency activates the system.

Images 20 & 21 are transfer purging ducts at the roof which collect smoke from the atrium spaces and deliver it to fan rooms for exhaust.
