Section 15250 Pipe Insulation

image 9: Pipe Insulation.

All piping within the building is insulated except for electrical conduit. This is an assurance against heat loss or gain, as well as a preventative measure against condensation which will occur when a dew point is reached at the surface of a pipe. Uninsulated piping can "sweat" and form condensate causing damage to finished surfaces, fittings, piping, and electric wiring.

Image 9 shows pipe insulation being installed at an air handler. Note the large pipe insulated at the ceiling which is the exhaust from the emergency generator below.

image 10.

Image 10 is of a storm water drain line which comes from a floor drain in the loading ramp alcove above. The pipe passes through an electrical switch gear room before it exits into a corridor and eventually to the holding cistern of the building. Because it is a storm water drain line, it has an open end to the weather and therefore is exposed to extremes in temperature change. To prevent condensation, the pipe in this area is both insulated and jacketed with a vapor barrier on the warm side.
