CMU's (concrete masonary units)
This image shows a typical coursing and bonding of concrete block, horizontal truss reinforcing, and through wall flashing prior to face brick installation. Note the dowels, which are engaged with the first two courses of block. The block in this assembly is load bearing and 75% solid. You can determine the percentage of solid by looking at the core holes in the block. Also note the eye loops protruding from the coursing joints at the horizontal truss reinforcing. These are to receive the brick ties, which allow for the brick and block to expand and contract while maintaining the integrity of the cavity and wall assembly.
