This connection typically occurs above the steel beams and girder connections below. It is done to facilitate making a clean connection above the floor plate. Here we see a splice as well as a change in column steel. Although both columns are the same depth, the weight per foot has been decreased on the upper column. Higher up on the structure the column size would also change relative to depth. This would require the addition of filler plates, splice plates, and /or bearing plates to be installed maintaining axial loading conditions while facilitating a reduction in steel tonnage.
