Division 5 - Metals

image 9: Bolted connections.

The slide shows a typical beam, girder column connection. Note the markings on the girder: A37 (ASTM designation for type of steel with a yield strength of 37,000psi, and a modulus of elasticity of 29,000,000psi); 9/2/8 the date it was fabricated (September 2, 1998); 18x35x21-10 (the designation for a W18x35 wide flange section which is 21'-10" long). A quick calculation would give us the weight of this member at 770 pounds. The dead load is important to the rigger of the crane lifts in the field. The rigger is responsible for placing cables and connections to the loads of steel to be hoisted into place. A miscalculation here could be fatal if a cable broke or slipped due to a heavy loading condition. Note the concrete slab has been bulkheaded off and steel dowels inserted for the next section of composite slab.
