Franklin Osborne Alexander (1897-1993)

The creator of two comic strips, Finney of the Force and The Featherheads, F. O. Alexander drew editorial cartoons for United Features Syndicate before becoming the staff political cartoonist for the Philadelphia Bulletin in 1941. Throughout much of his twenty-six-year career at the Bulletin, the native Missourian depicted the fortunes, misfortunes, hopes, and fears of his alter ego, everyman Joe Doakes. In 1966, Alexander donated more than one thousand of his original cartoons to the Special Collections Research Center.
