The Romance of Leonardo Da Vinci
Carol Ceraldi, Syracuse, NY

The binder bought this book at the annual Antiques & Uniques Fair
in Craftsbury, Vermont, only to have it sit on her bookshelf through many
summers. The original cover had a silver reproduction of the painting
of the Last Super as cover art on a molding gray linen. When she finally
read the book, she was immediately drawn into the daily studio life of
DaVinci and his contemporaries. It was clear upon reading that the thing
that got Da Vinci out of bed each day was his dream of flight. This binding
reflects this as well as the warm tones and textures of the time.
The textblock was rebound by sewing on three tapes with Fabriano Roma
endsheets and handsewn two-color endbands. The top edge was sprinkled
with acrylics. The book is covered in brown goatskin with veiney goat
vellum spine. The décor is of wing design, blind tooled with title
stamped in gold. Bound in 2005.
Carol Ceraldi studied bookbinding with Dorina Miller Parmenter and Peter Verheyen.
She has also taken classes with Daniel Kelm at the Garage Annex School
in Easthampton, MA.
