Collection Spotlight: APA PsycTherapy
by Anita Kuiken, Librarian for Falk College of Sport and Human Dynamics
APA PsycTherapy, a new streaming video subscription database available at Syracuse University Libraries, boasts 910+ videos of unscripted psychotherapy sessions on topics such as anger, anxiety, grief, interpersonal relationships, marital conflict, addiction, family relations and so much more. Renowned therapists and counselors model such therapeutic approaches as cognitive-behavioral therapy, mindfulness-based interventions and trauma-focused therapy, as well as demonstrate the nuance involved in navigating through obstacles during live therapy sessions.
APA PsycTherapy also includes the APA PsycTherapy Video Series. The videos in this series tend to begin with expert-led introductions to special topics or therapeutic approaches, followed by live sessions then ending with therapists sharing reflections during closing interviews. One of the gems in this sub collection includes titles developed to advance equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) by focusing on cultural competency and sensitivity. Sample titles include:
- Multicultural Counseling for Managing Acculturative Stress and Cross-Cultural Relationships
- Working With Clients With Physical Disabilities
- Affirmative Counseling With Transgender and Gender Diverse Clients
- Counseling Latina/Latino Clients Using a Family Systems Perspective
APA PsycTherapy is designed to be used in clinical and counseling environments for educational programs, training and self-study. Each video is fully indexed with subject and keyword terms, client descriptors and therapeutic approach to facilitate discovery. Videos are WCAG compliant and meet the highest standards for accessibility, contain searchable transcripts and offer closed captioning. Videos can be added to playlists, are segmented to highlight meaningful moments or can be clipped as users see fit. A handy PsycTHERAPY teaching guide is also available to guide classroom or training discussion and activities along with suggested video pairings.
Live therapy and counseling sessions are an important tool for teaching and learning in clinical and counseling psychology. While there are other counseling in video collections available, few have the scope and breadth of live content like APA PsycTherapy, making it a unique addition to Syracuse University Libraries.
