Collection Spotlight: NoveList Plus
by Brenna Helmstutler, Librarian for the iSchool
NoveList Plus is a reader’s advisory, or book recommendation, database. The target audience for the database is librarians who are engaging with patrons of all ages to identify books of interest, and certainly for LIS students in the School Media program, but is also relevant for Education students. It could also be useful for any SU affiliate who is interested in finding a particular title or type of book.
NoveList Plus has comprehensive searching built in to identify a book according to many criteria. The advanced search offers various limiters from which to select, including grade level, media mentions, Lexile range, and award winner or starred review. It also includes inclusive search limiters such as author’s gender identity, author’s nationality, and author’s cultural identity.
The browsing features are also comprehensive. Age group is selectable along with the mood of the book one is seeking as well as browsing by genre, awarded books, and by audiobooks. There are also book lists that are browsable including classics, a NoveList reading challenge, and book club best bets. For school librarians and educators, there is a 2023 guide available for the new school year with training, flyers, and new search terms.
It is important to note that NoveList Plus does not include full book access. It offers a record of information needed to find the book elsewhere. SU affiliates could check Summon or the Classic Catalog to determine availability from SU Libraries.
