The Libraries’ Resources: A Staff and Faculty Benefit
Syracuse University Libraries is a critical asset to student success and faculty research and teaching. But Syracuse University staff may not realize that all the collections, services and spaces available through the Libraries are also available for staff use. Anyone with an SU ID and Syracuse.edu email can access any of the valuable resources the Libraries offer.
Stop by Bird Library, Carnegie Library, King + King Architecture Library, the Law Library or the Special Collections Research Center to explore. Building hours are available online.
If you work remote you can still use the Libraries’ resources by connecting from off campus. Visit us online at library.syracuse.edu for more information.
So how can staff take advantage of this benefit? Below are a few ideas:
- Borrow materials or resources - SU staff can borrow any materials or resources from our collection. This includes books and eBooks, journals, databases, videos, maps, games, music and more! Looking to borrow something not available from our collections? You can request the item through interlibrary loan and even have it delivered to your office.
- Borrow technology – Need presentation equipment, audio/video equipment or an extra laptop? Borrow technology items from the Libraries for free!
- Sign-up to use wellness resources - The Libraries offer numerous resources for mind, spirit and physical wellness.
- Sign-up for free digital subscriptions - As a staff member, you can receive free digital subscriptions to Syracuse.com, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and the Washington Post. You can also access The Chronicle of Higher Education by searching Journals in the Libraries’ collections.
- Print posters - Need to print a poster? Use the plotter printer at Bird Library.
- Reserve a room – Need a private room for a call, a small team room for a project or a larger public space for an event? Reserve a room at the Libraries for free.
- Use Research Guides - Librarians and staff curate a variety of Research Guides on a wide range of topics that support users through research projects.
- Use data analysis/statistical software - Get help finding data to analyze, using statistical software like SAS, Stata and SPSS, research methods and study design. The Libraries also provide Qualtrics training.
- Use primary and secondary sources- Are you instructing a class, offering training or have a team that you’re working with that can benefit from learning how to use the Libraries and primary or secondary sources? Schedule a library instruction session or use one of our asynchronous tutorials.
- Attend workshops and events - The Libraries hosts a number of events throughout the year – from workshops to exhibitions – that all staff are welcome to attend.
- Leisure reading – Looking for a fiction book for leisure reading or have books that you want to donate? Check out the Little Free Bird bookshelf in Bird Library.
- Fun Fact: U.S. Government Documents - Did you also know that the Libraries is open to the public as a congressionally designated depository for U.S. government documents? Public access to the government documents collection is guaranteed by public law (Title 44 United States Code).
