Syracuse University’s The College of Arts and Sciences’ French Department is hosting the 26th Annual French Graduate Student Colloquium in Bird Library’s Peter Graham Scholarly Commons on April 11, 2025 from 9 am to 3 pm. The event is open to all Syracuse University affiliates.

This year’s event is titled “Theater and Cinema: Staging Challenges in the Francophone World.” It will explore the diverse dimensions of theatrical and cinematic staging, focusing on how space, voice and language shape dramaturgy and creative expression, and the complexities and intersections of theater and cinema in the French speaking world. “How does staging in theater and film serve as a means of expression, mediation or transformation? How does it engage with historical, cultural and social frameworks, and what can we learn from these creative spaces?” These questions will be at the heart of the day’s discussions.

The event will feature three panels focusing on theater, cinema and architecture, alongside two exciting artistic presentations: a visual art exhibit highlighting the intersections of theater and cinema, and a live performance of iconic French film songs by Syracuse University graduate students. The keynote speaker is J. Leichman, William Boizelle Associate Professor, Director of the Center for French and Francophone Studies at Louisiana State University.

The event is sponsored by: Symposium: A Quarterly Journal in Modern Literatures; the Department of Languages, Literature and Linguistics; The Albert George Fund, SU French and Francophile Studies Program; and Syracuse University Libraries.
