SU Libraries is excited to announce the launch of the CritQuant Research Guide, a new resource created to support the growing interest in critical quantitative research within the Syracuse University community. This guide was developed in consultation with faculty and staff from the School of Education to ensure it meets the specific needs of students and researchers in this field.

What is Critical Quantitative Research?

Critical quantitative research (or CritQuant) challenges traditional approaches to quantitative research by emphasizing equity, social justice and a deeper exploration of how data is collected, interpreted and used. It highlights the importance of context, especially when analyzing populations that are often marginalized or underrepresented. This approach questions power structures within the data itself and offers a more inclusive, critical lens through which we can view research outcomes.

What You’ll Find in the Guide

The CritQuant Research Guide provides access to a curated selection of books and journal articles that delve into key topics like equity-focused statistical methods, intersectionality in data analysis and critiques of standard research practices. Whether you're just beginning to explore this field or are already engaged in critical research projects, the guide offers valuable resources to enhance your understanding.

In addition to these resources, the guide includes access to the Critical Quantitative Research Group home page. This group, part of the School of Education, is a groundbreaking collective of faculty and students dedicated to challenging and reimagining traditional research methodologies in education.

The guide is relevant to the academic and research needs of those studying or working in education, sociology, disability studies and related fields. It’s designed to be a starting point for anyone looking to deepen their engagement with critical quantitative methodologies and the conversations surrounding them.
