Syracuse University Press is a global ambassador for the university. Its books address topics of critical interest to scholars and policy makers around the world, and the translated novels and poetry published delight readers and inspire connections across cultural differences. Closer to home, its books on New York state’s history, culture and environment inform and entertain a broad regional audience. The Press partners with learned societies, scholarly associations, libraries, museums and other cultural institutions to build and manage a shared infrastructure that makes humanities and social sciences research possible. Wherever SU Press books are read, Syracuse University has a presence.

SU Press will be launching its Spring-Summer 2025 publishing season, with new books on the history of Gilded Age James Street, a treasure trove of American folk music, translated works from around the world and more. These new books are part of the Press’ long history on campus.

The Press was founded by Chancellor Willam Tolley in 1943 and published its first title, IBM’s Precision Measurement in the Metal Working Industry in 1952. In 2009, the Press gave up its semi-autonomous status and was absorbed into the University’s nonprofit fold. Since the 2010s, the Press continued its mission as part of the Libraries.

SU Press advances research and teaching by publishing scholarly books in several academic fields, as well as books on the history and environment of New York State. The Press has prestigious series in Middle Eastern Studies, Irish studies, Jewish studies, Television and Popular Culture, and Indigenous studies, with a focus on the Haudenosaunee. It also publishes in community literacy, sports and entertainment, Arab American studies, and peace and conflict studies. To date, more than 2,100 books have been published and more than 1,600 remain in print.

Today, the Press publishes about 40 new and rereleased titles per year, as well as distributing books for five client presses. These titles have traveled around the world, with print sales in 25 countries and e-book sales in 80. The Press also takes part in open access programs, with more than 30 titles either currently or soon to be available without cost to readers.

For prospective authors, the Press provides resources as well as information on how to submit and format your proposal, prepare a manuscript, secure image permissions and get in touch with the acquisitions team.
